If this is the car owned by Paul Petty of Litchfield, Conn then I know it. Paul got to know as when he was living in Hanover, NH back in the late 1960's. He got to know my father, Dr. Reynolds of Dartmouth College through their interest in firearms- Paul being an avid Winchester collector. Paul brought the car up for the summer (1968 or 1969) and stored it in our garage. He gave us rides and also taught me to drive (in Dad's Buick that is). The Jag was pretty, fast and loud as hell- I think it had a 47 gal gas tank. He got pissed when my little sister drew a smiley face with her finger on the dust that had accumulated on the car.

Walt Hansgen, of Bernardsville, NJ, apparently acquired the car from the factory after the post-fire restoration. It then bore the ID plate for XKD-537. He sold it to Tom Foreman, of Stanton Station, NJ, his then-current or former mechanic from Hansgen's Jaguar dealership, who actively campaigned it in SCCA competition. I met Tom during that period (late 'Sixties). It was red, and I got quite a hairy ride in the passenger's "seat" over some North Jersey roads one afternoon, and actually drove it once (10 feet, backwards, to re-position it for a picture at the Atco Dragway (now Atco Raceway) in Atco, NJ, during a Delaware Valley Jaguar Club speed event!). Tom traded it as partial payment for a yellow Cooper Monaco to Herb Wetson (Wetson's 15-Cent Hamburgers) in Long Island, NY, to acquire a more competitive car; I helped Tom deliver it on a flatbed trailer (I couldn't raise the cash then to buy it myself!). I think Wetson straightened out one small crease in the bonnet, repainted it BRG, and sold it 2 weeks later to Paul Petty's family.

My father (Tom Foreman) did own xkd 537 for some time. He bought it from Maurico Miranda in Miami Florida. After flat towing the D type back up to Flemington New Jersey with a homemade towbar behind the station-wagon, he started racing it in SCCA. Thoughout ownership with my father, the car remained red in color with the only modification being a hoop-style rollbar under the headrest. The car was succesfully raced in the northeast region, despite the D types natural tendency to favor high-speed circuits-unlike Lime Rock and other courses in th Northeast. XKD 537 was able to spend some of its glory on public roads in New Jersey under temporary registration and had a few trips up to the Big-Apple. When is the last time you saw a Le-Mans prototype on public streets? Of all of the racecars and different classes my father competed in, he will alway say the D type was the most enjoyable to drive- from its perfect driving position, to its predictable 4-wheel drifts and stunning looks.
