First works car to be completed; 4/5/54 registerad for road; Le Mans, Hamilton Rolt (race number 14), 2nd; Reims 12 Hours, Hamilton/Rolt, 2nd; TT, Dundrod, Hamilton/Rolt, ret'd; displayed at Paris Salon; January 1955 sold to Duncan Hamilton; road-tested by John Bolster for Autosport; Morocco GP, Agadir GP, Morocco (4.09:1 axle), ret'd; Dakar GP (2.75:1 axle, 17in wheels), 3rd; British Empire Trophy, Oulton Park, 7th; Easter Goodwood, 3rd; Coupe de Paris, Montlhery, 2nd; Djurgand Park, Helsinki, Michael Head,1st; Johnson Trophy, Goodwood, 1st; Oporto GP, 3rd; Lisbon GP, ret'd; as XKC 402 is stamped over the number XKC 405 it would appear that following one of this car's many accidents XKC 405 may have been dismantled and certain parts incorporated in XKC 402; 1956 sold to 'Jumbo' Goddard and converted to quasi-XKSS by Hamilton, before factory created this model; screen frame made and central member between cockpits removed by Parvis Bridge Eng, Byfleet; Hamilton claimed car was inspiration for XKSS but denied by factory; believed registered 3 APB for a while, then back to OKV 1 (which had been retained by Hamilton); used as road car for many years; rolled following accident with lorry, but not badly damaged; Mont Ventoux hillclimb, France; 1965/66 taken by Goddard to Australia, continued to be used as a road car; October 1968, Oxley hillclimb, Tamworth, NSW; October 1984, auctioned and sold to Robin Davidson (London, UK). Sold to Peter Newmark 2000.

This car is mentioned in the book "Jaguar D type & XKSS" by Graham Robson. Said to have been driven in the '54 Le Mans by Tony Rolt and Duncan Hamilton.

The second D-type to be built by the Jaguar Competitions Dept. OKV 1 was the first of the famous trio of D-types that debuted at Le Mans in 1954. It was driven into second place by Hamilton and Rolt, missing victory by 135 seconds after 24 hours racing in foul conditions. The D-type then finished second at the Reims 12-Hours and retired in the classic Tourist Trophy, before being sold to Duncan Hamilton who raced it extensively and successfully.
This was another conservation restoration of a very historic Jaguar, going through the body, mechanics and interior, including the original seats. Every aspect of this car was kept as Jaguar designed and built the car to race at Le Mans.
