RM auction Monterey CA 8/14/1998, lot #460. Sports Car Market report reads:

"1 of 12 factory lightweight XKEs, 1st in class at '63 Sebring, then sold to Howard Gidovlenko, war hero, X2 pilot and unlimited Hydro racer, who never finished preparing it for Daytona '64. As stored in '63, runs, with spares still in crates."

JAGUAR LIGHTWEIGHT E-TYPE SELLS AT AMELIA ISLAND
The 1963 Ex-Qvale Jaguar Lightweight E-type (S850660) has successfully sold at the RM Auction at Amelia Island in Florida on Saturday 8 March 2003.

This extremely original car, which was found some five years ago in a Los Angeles garage where had been stored for 35 years, was the centre of much interest during the auction event.

There was naturally a great deal of interest in this extremely important competition Jaguar and the bidding was intense. The final hammer sale price for the car was US$ 1.25million.

The new US owner, who has a significant Jaguar collection, plans to show and campaign the car in selected North American events later this year.
For further information, please contact John Mayston-Taylor at Lynx..

Paul S. says the car was last sighted at Goodwood Festival so location of this car may have changed from US to UK.

There is some discussion about this car in "Jaguar E-Type" Jaguar World Monthly magazine, a collection of previous articles printed in book form. ISBN 1-873098-74-X

The car is mentioned and pictured with registration 5115 WK in the book "Jaguar D Type & XKSS" by Graham Robson. Originally owned and driven by Briggs Cuningham and Bob Grossman in the '63 Le Mans. It took 9th place.

Far be it for me to disagree with Graham Robson, whose knowledge of E-Types far outweighs mine, but................... I was under the impression that 5115 WK was the original registration of the Cunningham car S850659. First of the three lightweights delivered to him in 1963, and raced at Le Mans with race No.15, driven by Bob Grossman and Briggs Cunningham?
Cunningham raced three lightweights, S850659, S850664 and S850665, but also raced two more E-Types. These were roadster 875027 (Original reg.9023 DU) and Coupe 860630, both of which were lightened by Auto Engineering in New York (Alfred Momo), over the course of the 1962 and 1963 seasons. 860630 remained with Cunningham after he ceased racing and was sold to the Collier Collection in 1986, where I saw it last year. I would be pleased if anyone can correct or add anything to this.

Rich, you are correct about 9023 DU. as far as i recall,it was a steel car with a factory aluminium bonnet and hardtop.Alfred Momo fitted a D-type engine from the car Hawthorn drove at sebring in,I think, 1957 it had the special offset wire wheels, not the peg-lock dunlops.I remember seeing a roller-blind style radiator shield (controlled by a chain on the left side of the dash) it had the typical cunningham headlight covers, white paint and blue stripe

Delivered March '63 to Kjell Qvale; '63 Sebring 12 hours (Leslie/Morill 7th); '63 Laguna Seca (DNF); unearthed in c2000 after many years languishing in a California home (Qvale told me he had been offered the car but turned it down not realising what it was); restored by Lynx; sold at auction Amelia Island March '03 to Reyns; now in UK

Why have the UK reg. numbers been removed? Are they wrong for this car? It would be very useful to have the old reg. numbers shown as these cars easily get confused with one another. The reg. number would help to identify them in old photos, which IMO should benefit every enthusiast, no?

"Notes From Heritage Record was added: Registered 5113 WK"
